A healthy balanced diet includes some foods from these five groups:

  • Fruits
  • Grains
  • Protein
  • Dairy



The vegetables group also includes five subgroups:

  • Leafy Greens
  • Red And Orange Vegetables
  • Starchy Vegetables
  • Beans And Peas
  • Other Vegetables

To get enough nutrients and avoid boredom when eating, people should choose a variety of vegetables. People can enjoy raw or cooked vegetables. However, it is important to remember that cooking vegetables will lose some of their nutritional value. Also, some methods, like frying, can add unhealthy fats to a dish.



A balanced diet also includes lots of fruit. Instead of extracting fruit from juice, nutritionists recommend eating whole fruit. The juice contains less nutrients. Also, the manufacturing process often adds empty calories due to the added sugar. People should opt for fresh or frozen fruits, or fruits in canned water instead of syrup.



Grain formed the base of the nationally recognized food pyramid. Most of a person’s daily caloric intake comes from cereals. However, updated guidelines suggest that grain should only make up a quarter of a person’s plate.
